BEST KEPT VILLAGE COMPETITION
2008

The judging of the District Round of the Fiftieth Best Kept Village Competition is, at this moment taking place throughout the County. In order to celebrate the fifty years Wiltshire CPRE has been running the competition this year there will be an extra round. The winning villages of the Small, Medium and Large categories will go head-to-head with the winning village in the Laurence Kitching Competition to find the Best Kept Village in the County of Wiltshire. The winner will be presented with a piece of glass commemorating the achievement engraved by Sir Maurice Johnston - President of the Branch from 1996 to 2004.

Seventy villages entered the 2008 Best Kept Village Competition all eager to do well in this Anniversary year.
In the meantime all six villages eligible to enter The Laurence Kitching Competition have entered. They are Bratton (Large); Lea (Medium) and Wilcot (Small) the winners of the 2006 Best Kept Village Competition and Great Bedwyn (Large); Mildenhall (Medium) and Compton Chamberlayne (Small) the winners from 2007 and are competing against each other for the title of Winner of Winners and the opportunity to become Wiltshire Village of the Year.

Once again Wiltshire CPRE invited every village in the County to enter the Calor Village of the Year. In 2007 Steeple Ashton was selected as the village to represent Wiltshire in the competition. Judging has taken place and we are all anxiously awaiting the result hoping that the village has done well. This year eleven villages have entered the competition, four more than last year. They are Aldbourne, Beanacre, Berryfield, Biddestone, Bowerhill, Semington, Shaw, Stapleford, Stert, Whitley and Wilcot. Those short-listed will be asked to give a Presentation to a team of judges from Wiltshire CPRE, Wiltshire Life and Wiltshire County Council on the evening of Friday, 25th July at Worton Village Hall. We wish all the entrants good luck.

Sadly The Children’s Poster Competition has had a disappointing entry so far. The theme this year is ‘A postcard of my village’ and there is still time for schools to enter. The closing date is 30th June. So please encourage your local school to enter the competition. Every primary and junior school in the County received the entry details.

Finally, the Presentation Ceremonies for the Best Kept Village Competition and the Calor Village of the Year Competition will take place on Sunday, 5th October. The Laurence Kitching Competition Presentation will be held on Saturday, 25th October.
