This year CPRE Wiltshire was delighted when two new sponsors stepped forward to help finance the 2011 Best Kept Village Competition. Ecotricity very kindly donated £1,500 and also contributed to the prizes by presenting Ecotricity Home Energy Monitors and Ecotricity Certificates to the three winning parishes and the winning school in the Poster Competition. The other new sponsor, Devizes Books, concentrated on the Poster Competition. They graciously donated a Book Token for £30.00 to the winning school and also displayed their posters in the window of the bookshop. Wiltshire Life Magazine kindly provided us with excellent coverage of the competition. The number of villages entering the competition was 54, one more than the previous year and six of the villages had never entered before. There were 11 entries from Kennet, 14 from North Wiltshire, 8 from South Wiltshire, 1 from Swindon Borough Council and 20 from West Wiltshire. The winners of the villages in the districts of Wiltshire were · small villages: Woodborough Kennet - Upper and Lower Seagry :North Wilts - West Dean South Wilts; Hannington Swindon Borough Council; Chitterne West Wilthsire · medium villages: All Cannings Kennet; Lea North Wilts; Hindon South Wilts Steeple Ashton West Wiltshire · large villages: Ramsbury Kennet; Brinkworth North Wilts; Whiteparish South Wilts Hilperton West Wiltshire. We would welcome more entires for 2012 CPRE Wiltshire would like to thank all the judges who gave their time freely to travel around Wiltshire judging the villages entered in their category. Without these judges the competition would be impossible to run. The high standard achieved by the villages in the first round was maintained by them in the second round making it very difficult for the teams of judges responsible for selecting the Best Kept Village in Wiltshire in the Small, Medium and Large categories. The three County winners were · small village - West Dean; · medium village - Lea · large village - Ramsbury. According to Branch records this was the first time West Dean had won the small village category; Lea had won the medium village category four times, the last time in 2006 and it was the sixth time Ramsbury had won the large village category although the last they did that was in 1986. As soon as the winning villages were announced another team of judges set off to visit the three past winners that had entered the Laurence Kitching Winner of Winners Competition. This year the judging was very close with Blunsdon just coming out in front. Our congratulations are extended to all the successful villages in this year’s competitions. On Sunday, 9th October, the Presentation Team, including our President the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire Mr John Bush, The Vice-Chairman of Wiltshire Council Ms C Crisp; the High Sherriff of Wiltshire Mr Robert Hiscox and CPRE Wiltshire Chairman Mr George McDonic set out on the welcome task of presenting the awards to the winning villages.
Lea was the first stop where we were made welcome by all the villages present with a hot drink after the ceremony had taken place. The team then moved on to Ramsbury. The Parish Council had very kindly agreed that we could also make the presentation to the winning village in the Lawrence Kitching Award so our team was joined by Col Kitching who made the presentation to Blunsdon. Ramsbury Parish Council very kindly provided excellent refreshments for everyone in attendance which gave the team the opportunity to congratulate the residents of the village on their achievements.
After lunch the Presentation Team moved into South Wiltshire where presentations were made to the village of West Dean. Again, an excellent tea had been set out for everyone to enjoy in the village hall. We were fortunate that despite the blustery conditions rain held off until it was time to go home. The `Presentation Team ‘ had journeyed 155 miles! WILTSHIRE PRIMARY SCHOOL PAINTNG COMPETITION 2011 The standard of the entries in this year’s Children’s Poster Competition was remarkably high. We had a few more entries this year, which was most welcome, but still fewer than we would like. Please encourage your village or town Primary School to enter for 2012 – the Painting competition title will be "Sport in my Village in 2012". The competition was judged by Mrs J Batchelor, owner of sponsor Devizes Books and Mrs J Hart representing CPRE Wiltshire. After much consideration the results were as follows: · First - Corsham Regis Primary School; · Second - Churchfields, The Village School, Atworth; · Third - Marston Meysey Village; · Fourth - St George’s Primary School, Semington; · Fifth - St Peter’s School, Marlborough · Sixth - Sutton Veny CE Primary School. As mentioned earlier we would be delighted if more schools entered this competition and would be grateful if our members would encourage their local schools to enter it in 2012.
