A decision by the Transport Secretary on the road and tunnel scheme was expected on 17 July.

On 16 July, however, it was announced his decision would be delayed a further four months until 13 November, as he wished to receive comments from interested parties on the potential implications of a major new archaeological find. The part-circle of huge Neolithic pits is centred on Durrington Walls henge, in the northeast corner of the World Heritage Site. The pits were revealed by geophysical surveys undertaken by the Stonehenge Hidden Landscapes Project which is continuing to analyse enormous quantities of data collected in recent years. CPRE sees the new find as yet another reason why the road scheme should be abandoned. Our opposition to the scheme is explained in detail here.
