CPRE Wiltshire is delighted that Salisbury City Council has voted £50,000 of support to the Broken Bridges project. We are pleased to say that we supported this project initially in 2008, and we have now made a further donation.

We are thrilled to see it advancing as it is. The objective of purchasing agricultural land so as to restore and manage it as a thriving nature reserve, protecting the environment and improving public access, is at the heart of CPRE objectives. The land includes part of the River Avon Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Area of Conservation. Natural habitats include wet floodplain meadows and wood pasture as well as chalk streams. Under the stewardship of the Broken Bridges Nature Reserve project this beautiful area will have its biodiversity restored, invasive species controlled and better public access provided along the footpath.

That this land will, if appeals are successful, continue in public ownership as a valuable and beautiful natural resource at a time when Wiltshire countryside is under pressure as never before for housing and development.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) is the Countryside Charity. We stand up for a thriving countryside that benefits everyone.  We’re working for a countryside that’s rich in nature, accessible to everyone and playing a crucial role in responding to the climate emergency.  We’re advocating for the kind of Wiltshire countryside we all aspire to: one with sustainable, healthy communities and available to more people than ever, including those who haven’t benefited before. We stand for a countryside that enriches all of our lives, nourishing our wellbeing, and that we in turn nourish, protect and celebrate.

Our local knowledge and national profile means CPRE is effective in tackling both the specific issues that really matter to our members and the public, as well as the wider challenges the countryside faces.  We lobby both local and national government.
