The Importance of Chalk Streams

Did you know the UK is home to 85% of the world’s chalk streams? These crystal-clear, spring-fed rivers are among the rarest ecosystems on Earth, supporting incredible wildlife including kingfishers, water voles, brown trout, otters and countless rare plants and insects. They’re often called the “Amazon of the UK” because of their extraordinary biodiversity.

Here in Wiltshire, we’re lucky to have beautiful chalk streams like the River Wylye, flowing through places such as Langford Lakes Nature Reserve. But these precious waterways face growing threats from pollution, over-abstraction and climate change.

There is hope. A bill has been introduced in Parliament to begin the process of seeking UNESCO World Heritage recognition for the UK’s chalk streams, helping to secure the protection these globally important habitats deserve.

Let’s celebrate and protect these natural treasures before it’s too late. Every voice matters in the fight to save Wiltshire’s chalk streams for future generations.
